World Book and Copyright Day (also known as International Day of the Book or World Book Day) is a yearly event on 23 April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading. The Day was first celebrated in 1995.
The origin of the celebration is based on the fact that both Cervantes and Shakespeare died on this date (April 23rd). The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, people traditionally give a rose as a gift for each book sold.
